Join
us in discussing neighborhood-focused topics at upcoming
Town Hall meetings
As the economy strains, each of us as homeowners in District
3 is concerned about our families, our home investment,
our neighborhood and our safety in and around our communities.
Although these concerns are not unique to our corner of
the city, we do have the additional burden of reversing
years of neglect, bad decision-making, and demographic shifts
which have challenged many District 3 neighborhoods.
One of my top priorities is protecting and strengthening
our neighborhoods.
Over the course of the last four months, we have taken on-the-ground
tours with leaders from more than half of our neighborhood
associations. Before the year is up, I will have walked
and driven in and around all organized
neighborhoods in District 3.
This "neighbor-eye view" is invaluable.
We meet. We communicate one-on-one. Together,
we see what you look at each and every day. And I am better
able to understand the challenges you and your neighbors
face.
The hurdles can, at times, seem overwhelming. Especially
when it doesn't seem like the City is an effective partner
in addressing your concerns.
High weeds, stray dogs, panhandlers, transients, illegal
businesses, crimes of opportunity, abandoned properties,
trash dumping, absentee landlords, uninsured drivers, graffiti,
suspicious persons, music that blasts from speeding vehicles
on our neighborhood streets, the dearth of neighbor-friendly
economic development within walking distance of our homes
...
Homeowners are challenged enough by the economy. Neighborhoods
are challenged enough by some people's ignorance of, or
disrespect for, our laws and codes.
The least the City of Dallas can do is manage to
be more than broken in its response when you need us.
Come talk with me at two upcoming Town Hall meetings. Let
me tell you what we're doing to protect and strengthen our
neighborhoods, what citizen stakeholders and neighborhoods
are doing, and what I will continue to do as your best advocate
at City Hall.
The councilman shouldn't have to be the heavy ... but if
the system is broken and our neighborhoods are suffering
as the result, I am more than happy to step up to that plate.
