Challenges and Opportunities in our District 3

We are currently working on three projects within our District that will test our ability to find the right balance between Housing and Economic Development.

West Dallas
For months now we have been working with a private developer to bring a $2 million investment to create a Waterpark facility on Dallas Housing Authority (DHA) property at Fishtrap lake. We conducted a public hearing, and it passed City Plan Commission and City Council unanimously. We are now working with DHA to finalize plans for the project. What a great Economic Development catalyst adjacent to DHA that is within their responsibility and will contribute to their enlightened forward leadership.

North Oak Cliff
Permanent supportive housing for homeless in Oak Cliff?

The community and I were amazed to hear via the Dallas Morning News of DHA's plans to transfer 100 homeless residents to the DHA Cliff Manor on Fort Worth Avenue for permanent supportive housing. Immediately upon reading the article, I called and visited with MaryAnn Russ, the DHA President, to express to her my serious concern about this proposal and its potential negative impact on the surrounding single family neighborhoods....let alone the economic redevelopment of Fort Worth Avenue. I further commented that DHA has failed to reach out to "any" surrounding neighborhoods to inform, get feedback and ask for support for this proposal.

I asked for the DHA project to be put on hold and for us to have a meeting with our D3 Neighborhood Presidents. They have agreed to a meeting to review the plans and respond to neighborhood concerns. Our goal is to protect the single family neighborhoods of Stevens Park Village, Stevens Park Estates, Wedglea, El Tivoli, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Oak Cliff
The Parks at Wynnewood is a project to redevelop an existing low-income senior housing adjacent to Wynnewood Village Shopping Center, Wynnewood North, Elmwood, and Beckleywood neighborhoods. This project has created concern for its potential negative impact due to the 40 year requirement of low-income housing. I am working with the developer, neighborhood leaders, and Wynnewood Village Shopping Center to create safeguards to protect the single family neighborhoods and long-term viability of this key area of economic development.

Through all of these projects, I am engaging neighborhood leaders and surrounding neighbors to be informed about the issues, to provide feedback, and to think about the long term positive redevelopment in Oak Cliff.
